Alloy SST-409

Not only is alloy SST-409 cost effective and easily formed, it is one of the sturdiest of the stainless steel alloys. It can resist corrosion despite exposure to high temperatures and yet continue to be strong.

When machined stainless steel alloy 409 will produce chips and create a heavy build-up. It does well with annealing. Fabrication experts compare it ductility, especially during annealing, to that of soft carbon steel.

Temperatures of 1900 to 2050 F are best when hot working SST-409. It is also very important that the working temperature does not cool to less than 1500 F. It is also important that it is not soaked while in the optimal hot-working temperature range.

For soaking a temperature range of 1200 to 1400 F degrees should be maintained, with the temperature not falling any lower than that. As far as cooling for annealing, the best method is air cooling.

Alloy SST-409 has an excellent response to welding. It is important to use the correct welding processes, such as: SMA, GTA or GMA.

Because of it easy formability and endurance, 409 is especially prized by the automotive industry. Although some government regulations are necessitating the creation of new alloys for long time applications, catalytic converters, tailpipes and mufflers are still made by 409 stainless steel alloy.

Other industries find a myriad of uses for alloy SST-409. In the building industry it is used for structural supports and in hangers. It is also used in farm equipment, in making diamond tread plate and for shipping containers
