Technical Casting Questions
Here are some technical casting questions that our customers often ask and that we are pleased to answer.
What types of metal alloys are poured in Shelmet's investment casting?
There are over 100 different metals and alloys, both ferrous and non-ferous, that Shelmet pours. These include alloys of aluminum; copper, cobalt, and nickel base; plus different steels, such as carbon, alloy, tool and stainless steel. For a complete list of our materials and alloys, click here. What dimensional tolerances can we expect from investment casting?
Exceptionally close dimensional tolerances can be produced in a wide range of alloys. Part size and design complexity are the determining factors, but a linear tolerance of +/- .005 inches, (.127mm) per inch is common in investment casting. Generally, a tighter dimensional tolerance can be realized in a smaller part. Top
Are there limits to part sizes that investment casting produces?
At Shelmet, our precision casting process is virtually unlimited by part size, producing parts that weigh less than an ounce to those with weights upwards of 10+ pounds. It is quite common for us to produce we parts weighing as little as a few ounces. Top
Does investment casting require a certain type of tooling or pattern equipment?
We manufacture a split negative-cavity aluminum die that is then used to create the wax models. Based on the complexity of the design, soluble wax cores and ceramic inserts may also be used to produce the desired result. Top
